Abstract: The recent development of REDD+ mechanisms requires reliable estimation of carbon stocks, especially in tropical forests that are particularly threatened by global changes. Even though tree height is a crucial variable for computing aboveground forest biomass (AGB), it is rarely measured in large-scale forest censuses because it requires extra effort. Therefore, tree height has to be predicted with height models. The height and diameter of all trees over 10 cm in diameter were measured in 33 half-hectare plots and 9 one-hectare plots throughout northern French Guiana, an area with substantial climate and environmental gradients. We compared four different model shapes and found that the Michaelis-Menten shape was most appropriate for the tree biomass prediction. Model parameter values were significantly different from one forest plot to another, and this leads to large errors in biomass estimates. Variables from the forest stand structure explained a sufficient part of plot-to-plot variations of the height model parameters to improve the quality of the AGB predictions. In the forest stands dominated by small trees, the trees were found to have rapid height growth for small diameters. In forest stands dominated by larger trees, the trees were found to have the greatest heights for large diameters. The aboveground biomass estimation uncertainty of the forest plots was reduced by the use of the forest structure-based height model. It demonstrated the feasibility and the importance of height modeling in tropical forests for carbon mapping. When the tree heights are not measured in an inventory, they can be predicted with a height-diameter model and incorporating forest structure descriptors may improve the predictions. © Author(s) 2014. Abstract: The rainforests of the Neotropics shelter a vast diversity of plant, animal and microscopic species that provide critical ecosystem goods and services for both local and worldwide populations. These environments face a major crisis due to increased deforestation, pollution, and climate change, emphasizing the need for more effective conservation efforts. The adequate monitoring of these ecosystems has proven a complex and time consuming endeavour, which depends on ever dwindling taxonomic expertise. To date, many species remain undiscovered, let alone described, with otherwise limited information regarding known species population distributions and densities. Overcoming these knowledge shortfalls and practical limitations is becoming increasingly possible through techniques based on environmental DNA (eDNA), i.e., DNA that can be obtained from environmental samples (e.g. tissues, soil, sediment, water, etc.). When coupled with high-throughput sequencing, these techniques now enable realistic, cost-effective, and standardisable biodiversity assessments. This opens up enormous opportunities for advancing our understanding of complex and species-rich tropical communities, but also in facilitating large-scale biomonitoring programs in the neotropics. In this review, we provide a brief introduction to eDNA methods, and an overview of their current and potential uses in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of neotropical rainforests. We also discuss the limits and challenges of these methods for our understanding and monitoring of biodiversity, as well as future research and applied perspectives of these techniques in neotropical rainforests, and beyond. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to test the capacity of the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungus, Scleroderma bermudense, to alleviate saline stress in seagrape (Coccoloba uvifera L.) seedlings. Plants were grown over a range (0, 200, 350 and 500 mM) of NaCl levels for 12 weeks, after 4 weeks of non-saline pre-treatment under greenhouse conditions. Growth and mineral nutrition of the seagrape seedlings were stimulated by S. bermudense regardless of salt stress. Although ECM colonization was reduced with increasing NaCl levels, ECM dependency of seagrape seedlings increased. Tissues of ECM plants had significantly increased concentrations of P and K but lower Na and Cl concentrations than those of non-ECM plants. Higher K concentrations in the leaves of ECM plants suggested a higher osmoregulating capacity of these plants. Moreover, the water status of ECM plants was improved despite their higher evaporative leaf surface. The results suggest that the reduction in Na and Cl uptake together with a concomitant increase in P and K absorption and a higher water status in ECM plants may be important salt-alleviating mechanisms for seagrape seedlings growing in saline soils.

Abstract: The present study examines the effect of alkaloids extract from Siparuna guianensis leaves and stems on corrosion of C38 steel in 0.1 M HCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization technique and Raman spectroscopy. The protection efficiency is better with stems alkaloids extract. The inhibition was assumed to occur via adsorption of inhibitor molecules on the metal surface. The influence of stems alkaloids extract concentration on corrosion of low carbon steel in 0.1 M HCl was studied. The inhibition efficiency obtained from impedance and polarization measurements was in a good agreement and was found to increase with increasing concentration of alkaloids extract up to 50 mg/L for stems extract. The adsorption of the extract on the low carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption.

Abstract: The present report continues to focus on the broadening application of plant extracts for metallic corrosion control and reports on the inhibiting effect of the Aniba rosaeodora alkaloidic extract on the corrosion of C38 steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were applied to study the metal corrosion behavior in the absence and presence of inhibitor. Studies on the phytochemical constituents were established to determine the active(s) molecule(s). XPS was also carried out to establish the mechanism of corrosion inhibition of the active molecule of C38 steel in acid solution. The inhibitor extract acted as an efficient corrosion inhibitor in 1 M HCl. The experimental data obtained from EIS method show a frequency distribution and therefore a modelling element with frequency dispersion behaviour, a constant phase element (CPEα, Q) has been used. Graphical methods are illustrated by synthetic data to determine the parameter of CPE (α, Q). Polarization studies showed that the Aniba rosaeodora alkaloidic extract was a mixed-type inhibitor and its inhibition efficiency increased with the inhibitor concentration. Studies on the phytochemical constituents of the total alkaloids extract shows that it contains the anibine as the major alkaloid. The results obtained from the electrochemical study have clearly showed that the inhibition efficiency of the total extract was due to the presence of anibine. The XPS studies showed the formation of inhibitor layer containing the Aniba rosaeodora alkaloidic extract and the anibine molecules. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
