Abstract: Alkaloids extract of Aspidosperma album was tested as corrosion inhibitor for C38 steel in 1 M HCl by using polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Potentiodynamic polarization curves indicated that the plant extract behaves as mixed-type inhibitors. Impedance measurements showed that the double-layer capacitance decreased and charge-transfer resistance increased with increase in the inhibitors concentration and hence increasing in inhibition efficiency. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior of C38 steel in 1 M HCl with and without addition of plant extract was studied in the temperature range 25 – 55°C. The adsorption of the inhibitor molecules was in accordance with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The results obtained show that this plant extract could serve as an effective inhibitor for the corrosion of C38 steel in hydrochloric acid. © 2011 by ESG.

Abstract: The present study examines the effect of alkaloids extract from Siparuna guianensis leaves and stems on corrosion of C38 steel in 0.1 M HCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization technique and Raman spectroscopy. The protection efficiency is better with stems alkaloids extract. The inhibition was assumed to occur via adsorption of inhibitor molecules on the metal surface. The influence of stems alkaloids extract concentration on corrosion of low carbon steel in 0.1 M HCl was studied. The inhibition efficiency obtained from impedance and polarization measurements was in a good agreement and was found to increase with increasing concentration of alkaloids extract up to 50 mg/L for stems extract. The adsorption of the extract on the low carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption.

Abstract: The electrochemical behaviour of 254 SMO super austenitic stainless steel in natural seawater collected from river mouth of French Guiana was investigated. A comparative study of samples immersed during 22 days in this environment was made including influences of scraped biofilm introduced in experiments and of stirring. Electrochemical measurements – open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear polarisation (LP) – are used to characterize the metal/medium interface included biofilms adhesion. The EDX analysis (EDAX system) shows that the chemical composition of adhered biofilm consists mostly of iron, oxygen, silicon and aluminium and seem preferentially bind on metal defects. © 2013 by ESG.

Abstract: Monitoring the state of small waterbodies and wetlands is very useful in dry regions, because their existence is entirely controlled by the rhythm of local rainfall. On VEGETATION image colour composites, waterbodies and marshy vegetation show up clearly. Yet simple image classification does not yield sufficiently good results because 'spectral signatures' vary significantly together with the ecological conditions of these surfaces. A robust contextual procedure taking into account local contrast was successfully developed and tested. A systematic validation was carried out and a map of waterbodies and wetlands was produced for Burkina Faso and neighbouring regions.

Abstract: Philodendron acutatum (Araceae) is a hemiepiphyte common to the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil. In two localities, we studied the species' breeding system and associations with flower-visiting insects, along with an analysis of its floral scent composition. The fruit set of self-incompatible P. acutatum was high, more than 90%, and inflorescences were exclusively pollinated by one species of scarab beetle, Cyclocephala celata (Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae). Pollinators are drawn toward the inflorescences at dusk by strong floral fragrances given off during the female phase of anthesis, along with endogenous heating of the spadix, whose temperatures were recorded at more than 11 degrees C above ambient air. Two other species of flower-visiting Cyclocephala were also consistently recovered in blacklight trappings during the flowering period of P. acutatum. The fact that only C. celata was found in association with P. acutatum suggests a local reproductive dependence of the plant to this scarab beetle species. Dihydro-beta-ionone and 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-hexanone, a rare volatile molecule so far unreported as a floral compound, together accounted for more than 97% of the unique scent composition of P. acutatum and might be involved in specific attraction of C. celata.

Abstract: In this work, an alkaloids extract from Annona squamosa plant have been studied as possible corrosion inhibitor for C38 steel in molar hydrochloric acid (1 M HCl). Potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance methods have been used. The corrosion inhibition efficiency increases on increasing plant extract concentration. Polarisation studies showed that Annona squamosa extract was mixed-type inhibitor in 1 M HCl. The inhibition efficiency of Annona squamosa extract was temperature-dependent and its addition led to an increase of the activation corrosion energy revealing a physical adsorption between the extract and the metal surface. The adsorption of the Annona squamosa extract followed Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The inhibitive effect of Annona squamosa is ascribed to the presence of organic compounds in the extract. The examined extract is considered as non-cytotoxic substance.

Abstract: Corrosion inhibition effect of alkaloids extract from Palicourea guianensis plant (AEPG) on C38 tell in 1 M HCl medium has been investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The polarization studies that AEPG acts as mixed-type inhibitor. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the charge transfer resistance increases and the double layer capacitance decreases on increasing plant extract concentration. The inhibition efficiency of the extract obtained from impedance and polarization measurements was in a good agreement and was found to increase with increasing concentration of the extract. Inhibition efficiency of 89% was achieved with 100 mg L-1 of AEPG at 25 degrees C. The obtained results showed that, the Palicourea guianensis extract could serve as an effective inhibitor for the corrosion of steel in acid media. The adsorption of AEPG obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

Abstract: The effect of alkaloids extracted from Isertia coccinea plant (AEIC) on the corrosion of C38 steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. Potentiodynamic polarization curves indicated that the extract behave as mixed-type inhibitor. The experimental data obtained from EIS method show a frequency distribution and therefore a modelling element with frequency dispersion behaviour, a constant phase element (CPE) has been used. The inhibition efficiencies of the extract calculated by three methods show the same tendency. Inhibition was found to increase with increasing concentration of the plant extract. The results obtained show that the extract solution of the plant could serve as an effective inhibitor for the corrosion of C38 steel in hydrochloric acid solution. The apparent activation energy of the process taking place in inhibitor presence was determined on the ground of four temperature values in the range from 25 degrees C to 55 degrees C using the data obtained by two independent methods. Theoretical fitting of different isotherms, Langmuir, Temkin and Frunkin, were tested to clarify the nature of adsorption.

Abstract: We generalize Ripley's K function to get a new function, M, to characterize the spatial structure of a point pattern relatively to another one. We show that this new approach is pertinent in ecology when space is not homogenous and the size of objects matters. We present how to use the function and test the data against the null hypothesis of independence between points. Abstract: Climate models predict significant rainfall reduction in Amazonia, reducing water availability for trees. We present how functional traits modulate the tree growth response to climate. We used data from 3 years of bimestrial growth measurements for 204 trees of 53 species in the forest of Paracou, French Guiana. We integrated climate variables from an eddy covariance tower and functional trait values describing life history, leaf, and stem economics. Our results indicated that the measured functional traits are to some extent linked to the response of trees to climate but they are poor predictors of the tree climate-induced growth variation. Tree growth was affected by water availability for most of the species with different species growth strategies in drought conditions. These strategies were linked to some functional traits, especially maximum height and wood density. These results suggest that (i) trees seem adapted to the dry season at Paracou but they show different growth responses to drought, (ii) drought response is linked to growth strategy and is partly explained by functional traits, and (iii) the limited part of the variation of tree growth explained by functional traits may be a strong limiting factor for the prediction of tree growth response to climate. © 2014 Fabien Wagner et al.
